Shade anywhere in the yard
Not every patio touches the house. Some of the best spots sit out in the yard: by the pool, near the garden, at the back fence. A freestanding cover brings shade to those spots.
Freestanding means the cover stands on its own posts. No wall to attach to. No roof tie-in. Four or six posts carry the whole roof.
This freedom changes what is possible. Shade over the fire pit. A dry spot by the pool equipment. A covered outdoor kitchen away from the house.
Freestanding covers also work when the house wall cannot take the load. Older walls, odd angles, or HOA rules can all push you to a stand-alone design.
Posts and footings do the work
With no house to lean on, the posts carry everything. That makes footings critical. Each post sits in a deep concrete footing sized by the engineer.
The frame is beefier than an attached cover. Beams span between posts with no wall help. We size every member for wind loads on all four sides.
Wind hits a freestanding cover differently. It can push from any direction and lift from below. The design accounts for that with stronger bracing.
The result looks light but stands strong. Good design hides the muscle. You see clean lines, not bulky steel.
Great spots for one
Pool decks are the top pick. A cover over part of the deck gives swimmers a shady rest spot. Lounge chairs under a roof beat chairs in full sun.
Outdoor kitchens love a freestanding roof. The grill stays dry. The cook stays cool. Guests gather under cover while food comes off the heat.
Play areas get safer with shade. Kids play longer and sunburn less. A cover over the swing set or sandbox is a parent favorite.
Garden seating, hot tubs, and fire pits all work too. Anywhere you linger outside is a candidate for a roof.
How it works
Placement is the first decision. We help you pick the spot with the best sun, breeze, and access.
- Free visit. We walk the yard and study sun patterns. We check setbacks so the cover sits where the city allows.
- Placement plan. You see the cover on your lot: size, height, and how it relates to the house, pool, and fences.
- Written price. One price covers footings, frame, roof, and install. In writing, no surprises.
- Permits. Freestanding covers need permits with engineered drawings. We handle it all.
- Build. Footings cure, posts go up, beams span, roof panels lock in. Most finish in three to four days.
Simple care
Hose the roof down a few times a year. Check that water runs off all four sides and does not pond anywhere.
Keep soil and mulch pulled back from post bases. Posts should sit in air, not in wet dirt. A few inches of clearance does it.
After storms, check for shifted panels or loose trim. Freestanding roofs catch wind from every side, so give them a look.

Design it like a destination
A freestanding cover is a destination in the yard. Treat it that way. Lights, a fan, and good furniture turn it into the spot everyone picks.
Think about the path to it too. A lit walkway from the back door makes the cover feel connected, even at night.
Where to put it
A freestanding cover can go anywhere in the yard, which is both the fun and the hard part. Near the pool is the most popular spot. Shade next to the water gets used every single day in summer. But keep it far enough back that pool chemicals and splash do not eat the finish. Ten feet of breathing room is a good rule.
South Florida soil is mostly sand, which means footings need to go deep enough to hold. A freestanding cover has no house to lean on, so the posts do all the work. We pour proper concrete footings and size them for the wind load. A cover that wobbles in a thunderstorm was not built right.
Check setbacks before you pick the spot. Most Fort Lauderdale cities require structures to sit a certain distance from property lines. The number varies by city and zoning. We check the setback rules during the free visit so you do not design around a spot you cannot use.
Then make it a destination. A freestanding cover works best when it feels like a room, not a roof on posts. Outdoor lighting, a ceiling fan, and furniture picked for the space turn it into the place everyone gathers. Run power out to it while we build and you will use it three times as much.
